SELF-PROCLAIMED “RODEO CLOWN” GLENN BECK CLAIMS THE CIVIL RIGHTS MANTLE OF MARTIN LUTHER KING ? ? ?

Check-it-out: Bob Herbert has a fantastic column in the New York Times titled, “America is Better Than This” about Glenn Beck’s rally today on the 47th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.  Beck is claiming the King mantle for Civil Rights, and holding his rally in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial.

For Beck to try to position himself alongside Lincoln and King — historical American giants — is both egotistical and absurd.

Herbert writes, “Consider a brief sampling of their rhetoric.”

Lincoln: “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”

King: “Never succumb to the temptation of becoming bitter.”

Beck: “I think the president is a racist.”

NUFF SAID.

FRIDAY FYI’s

*** REPUBS ERRONEOUSLY CLAIM LETTING W.’s TAX CUTS ON THE TOP 2% EXPIRE ON SCHEDULE WILL UNFAIRLY HIT SMALL BUSINESSES:  The facts are that letting W.’s tax cuts expire will only affect the 3% of small businesses that are subject to the top two individual tax rates, according to Len Burman, former director of the Tax Policy Center at the Urban Institute.  He also noted that much of the income from those affected businesses are not from mom-and-pop shops, but rather comes from private partnerships such as law and accounting firms and investment firms.

V.P. Joe Biden said this week that the Right’s claims are a “bunch of malarkey.” He said that only a few small businesses would be helped by an extension of the tax cuts, and that the loss of $700 billion in revenue by extending them would add to the deficit and is “just bad economic policy.”

*** CONSIDER THIS:  If tax cuts create so many jobs, how is it that the HUGE tax cuts that W. enacted — didn’t?  And, how is it that the tax hikes that Clinton enacted on the higher income level led to HUGE job growth?  So, when you hear the Right continue to beat the tax-cuts drum as the ONLY solution to our economic crisis, be sure to CONSIDER THIS.

*** ON THE CIA PAYROLL:  An aide to President Karzai, who is at the heart of a corruption investigation, Mohammed Zia Salehi is also being paid by the CIA.  It’s not clear what exactly he’s being paid for but it is one of those “deep contradictions” in the Afghanistan policy — wanting to root out corruption in Afghanistan, while also paying these allegedly corrupt officials.

*** PROUD TO SEE:  More than forty religious — Muslim, Jewish, Christian — and civic groups have formed a coalition to support the Cordova House Islamic Center in Manhattan.  The group is called New York Neighbors for American Values, and asserts that the debate over the center “was creating fear and division and that they would fight for U.S. constitutional freedoms to be upheld.”

*** ALSO PROUD TO SEE:  Almost 20 congregations are planning to protest the plans of a church in Florida, the Dove World Church, to burn the Quran — by conducting interfaith readings from the Torah, the Bible, and the Quran.  The minister of the United Church of Gainesville, Larry Reimer,  stated, “Silence in the face of their statements can be misconstrued as agreement, and I think it’s important for all of us to speak up.”  Remember Niemoller’s words: “When they came for the Jews, I remained silent; I wasn’t a Jew … When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out.”

*** AND FINALLY, THE ECONOMY:  Economic indicators are not improving.  Unemployment is stubborn at 9.5%, and could worsen;  jobless claims are inching up, not down; and new home sales were down 12.4%.  Maybe not a double-dip, but not really a recovery either.

Not good news for the Dems in November.  There’s much that could be done, but no political will to do it.  The Democrats have caved on passing any stimulus that could help the economy because the Right has demonized any government spending to pump money into the sputtering economy (other than tax cuts for the über wealthy).  So the one faint light of hope lies with the Federal Reserve.

The Fed could use its control of monetary policy to prod the economy into a growth phase, but because what the Fed does is done behind closed doors, we don’t know what or when or if they may take steps to get us out of this recession.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke may offer a glimpse into their thinking and possible actions today at the Fed’s annual retreat.  Bernanke will say, “The Committee is prepared to provide additional monetary accommodation through unconventional measures if it proves necessary, especially if the outlook were to deteriorate significantly.”

Dems should be hoping for a sign that the Fed might change course, as should the entire country.  But, at this point in the campaign cycle it appears that anything the Fed might do will come too late to change the trajectory of this mid-term election.  The next two years could be political hell.

WHERE’D THAT DEFICIT COME FROM?

chart of the day, bush policies deficits, june 2010

Maybe you’ve seen some version of this graph.  It’s interesting because it shows clearly the sources of our federal budget deficit.  This visual is from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a non-partisan research and policy institute.  We think it’s particularly interesting because it shows that The TARP which was passed under W. — considered the major contributor to the deficit by the Right — is actually only a little tiny blip (shaped like a light blue triangle) in the lower left corner.  Its impact is limited, and very very small.

And that’s what the Repubs are soooo worried about.  Yet, they’re not at all worried about the Bush Tax Cuts, which have the largest impact on federal deficits.  Oh, and the two unfunded wars, that’s a pretty big impact also.  But the Republican Tea Party isn’t concerned about that.  No, what they’re sooo worried about is the TARP, which stopped the global economy from melting down.  Passing TARP was pretty much the only good thing W. did in his entire eight year Presidency.

But, you see, the TARP just doesn’t fit in with the Republican Tea Party’s narrative:  The government is bad, and any thing the government does (except for the military, of course) is almost evil.  So, TARP had to be bad, because the government did it.  Get it?

FRIDAY FYI’s

RECESS APPOINTMENTS: President Obama has just made four recess appointments, following his end-run around the Senate’s obstructionism last month when he installed Dr. Donald Berwick as the head of the agency that runs Medicare and Medicade.  Republican Senators have set all time records for foot-dragging this administration’s appointees.  At times, when Obama’s appointees finally get Senate action the vote is 97 ayes!

These recess appointees will be able to serve until the end of 2011 without Senate consent:

  • Winslow Sargeant, after waiting over 14 months for a Senate vote, will be chief counsel of advocacy for the Small Business Administration.
  • Richard Sorian is to be the new assistant secretary for public affairs at the Health and Human Services Department. He had been waiting more than 11 months since Obama nominated him.
  • Maria del Carmen Aponte will be chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in El Salvador. She’d been waiting more than eight months.
  • Elisabeth Hagen will be undersecretary for food safety at the Agriculture Department. Her wait for Senate action was nearly seven months.

MIDEAST PEACE?:  Israel and Palestine are set to resume direct peace talks early next month in Washington.  An agreement to pursue peace, leading to a two state solution, is the path to resolving so many international problems.  We know President Obama is focused and serious, let’s hope Netanyahu and Abbas are as well.  Check-it-out.

ECONOMIC STIMULUS WITHOUT A VOTE: Investor Bill Gross proposes a huge refinancing of taxpayer-backed mortgages scheme to the Obama administration — and it wouldn’t add to the federal deficit.  By refinancing mortgages, at the current (and lower) rates it, is projected that homeowners would save $46 billion a year — and that would spur $50 billion a year in new consumer spending and potentially raise home prices 10%.  According to Gross, “It’s the one thing they (Washington) can do that doesn’t increase the deficit and that doesn’t require legislation.”

WE WERE WRONG:  Geez, who’d-a-thunk-it — Dr. Laura Schlessinger IS losing her 30 year-long radio show, following her racist rant last week in which she used the N-word eleven times.  We predicted that her hateful talk would only boost her ratings, and that she’d be even more popular with the uninformed.  And even with her surprise support from Sarah Palin, (didn’t Sarah know Dr. Laura said she was unqualified to be V.P.?) Dr. Laura Schlessinger is still losing her radio show.  She says she’s quitting on her own — uh huh.

GROUND ZERO MOSQUE

“TRASH THE CONSTITUTION,” SAYS THE RIGHT!

We just couldn’t let the Cordoba House controversy go without comment.  So, here goes our (hopefully) short rant:  THE RIGHT LOVES our Constitution and the spirit of our founding fathers so much that they are screaming for the destruction of both.

The embrace of freedom of religion is at the core of what America stands for, and what our Constitution demands.  Repubs evidently don’t believe in America;  why don’t they just throw out the entire Bill of Rights?

We suspect that the fear-mongering is not inspired by actual fear.  No, we are pretty sure that the all too familiar Repub fear-mongering is one more example of election year “do anything to win” mindset of the Right.

HERE ARE THE CORDOBA HOUSE FACTS:

  • The proposed Islamic Center is NOT located on “ground zero”:  it is two blocks away from the former the World Trade Center, and could not even be seen from there.
  • The “hallowed ground” is not so hallowed: there is an adult porn shop and strip clubs within two blocks of “ground zero”; an off-track betting site; and Thunder Lingerie — all in the same area.
  • Repubs say the leaders of the Cordoba House are being “insensitive” to consider putting an Islamic Center near “ground zero.”  In order for it to be considered “insensitive” one would have to believe that the Twin Towers were attacked by Islam, rather than by Al Qaeda.
  • The Twin Towers were NOT attacked by Islam:  They were attacked by extremist terrorists within Islam.  It would be like refusing to let a Catholic church be built in Oklahoma City because terrorist Tim McVeigh was a Catholic.
  • An Islamic Center, led by moderate Muslims, offers an opportunity for these moderates to broadcast the message that the Right has been demanding:  “Muslims do not support extremists groups like Al Qaeda.”
  • An Islamic Center in the heart of Manhattan will tell the world that “only in America” is there true freedom of religion, and that our country stands by our principles — demonstrating to everyone (including the Islamic world) that Osama bin Laden lies when he says the United States of America is at war with Islam.

It seems that it’s just fine with the Right for houses of vice to be “in the shadow” of ground-zero, but not for a house of worship.   The decision of New York to support the Cordoba House was inspired in part by the desire to encourage religious healing and to demonstrate to the world that America will not be bowed by Osama bin Laden.

New York City Mayor Bloomberg said it well (and with a patriotic quiver to his voice):

“The government has no right whatsoever to deny that right – and if it were tried, the courts would almost certainly strike it down as a violation of the U.S. Constitution. Whatever you may think of the proposed mosque and community center, lost in the heat of the debate has been a basic question – should government attempt to deny private citizens the right to build a house of worship on private property based on their particular religion? That may happen in other countries, but we should never allow it to happen here. This nation was founded on the principle that the government must never choose between religions, or favor one over another.

The World Trade Center Site will forever hold a special place in our City, in our hearts. But we would be untrue to the best part of ourselves – and who we are as New Yorker’s and Americans – if we said ‘no’ to a mosque in Lower Manhattan.”

This hateful attack by the Right on America’s basic values diminishes us all if we back down — if we do not stand up for our principles Al Qaeda wins.

Even calling the Islamic Center the “Ground Zero Mosque” is just another red-herring to rile up the voters with fear-mongering, and distracts us from our American ideals of tolerance and getting along peacefully.

Many Republican officials are indicating that they’re going to make this an election year issue after President Obama’s statement of support.  Let’s just be sure to have the FACTS ready to respond with, because our Constitution and our American ideals are on our side.

Oh, and by the way:  how about the hallowed ground at the Pentagon, which was also attacked on 9/11?  Yeah, that’s right, there’s a mosque in the Pentagon that’s been there since right after 9/11.  The Pentagon welcomed a mosque on their hallowed ground.  Good enough for me.

FRIDAY FYI’s

***DR. LAURA SCHLESSINGER has apologized after her shocking, racist rant on her talk radio program this week.  In response to a black female caller who complained about the racist attitudes of her white husband’s friends, and their use of the n-word, Dr. Laura ‘comforted’ her caller by saying the n-word 11 times over the course of five minutes.  Progressive talk hosts are asking if Dr. Laura’s racist rant will cause her to lose her radio show, and our answer here at CLN is “NO” she likely will not.  The tired right-wing “Southern Strategy” of race baiting to win elections is back in full force, and Dr. Laura will be their new hero and her ratings will go up.  Sad.

***THE TEA PARTY COMIX CREATOR SAYS, “I hate Obama, but I’m no racist.”  Uh huh.

***THE NATION‘s Salim Muwakkil, in his article “Obama, The Right and Race” offers a critique of “Kabuki Democracy,” Eric Alterman’s recent essay, by pointing out that “What seems to be missing in Alterman’s historical summary, however, is the centrality of the “Southern Strategy” and the Republicans’ canny exploitation of racial resentment.”  Muwakkil praises Alterman’s comprehensive analysis, but brings attention to the fact that even progressive intellectuals shy away from racial issues in our politics and the Republican’s time-tested “Southern Strategy.”

MISLEADING POLLS

CHECK-IT-OUT at First Read:  Chuck Todd breaks down the poll numbers on the latest attitudes of the American people.  For the first time the GOP has higher approval numbers than Dems in some areas of concern, leading some to think that the November elections will be a tsunami win for the GOP.  But as First Read asks, “… could those GOP electoral gains come from just one part of the country? The poll contains this interesting finding: The GOP has a HUGE generic-ballot edge in the South (52%-31%), but it doesn’t lead anywhere else. In the Northeast, Dems have a 55%-30% edge; in the Midwest, they lead 49%-38%; and in the West, it’s 44%-43%. Yet do keep this caveat in mind: Many of the congressional districts Republicans are targeting outside of the South resemble some of those Southern districts they’re hoping to win back in November — where you have whiter and older voters.”

Forty percent think the US is worst off since Obama’s presidency, thirty-one percent say we’re better off, and twenty-eight percent think it’s about the same.  MSNBC’s Morning Joe presented these numbers this morning by lumping the 40% “worst off” with the 28% “about the same” and spun the numbers as “almost 70% of Americans don’t think the President is doing a good job.”  OR we might say that 58% think Obama’s doing a good to fair job in a difficult time!

And seven out of ten say that President Obama’s performance in office has “met or exceeded their expectations,” which says that the country still trusts and believes in his presidency.  We’re hangin’ in there.
