No one in these campus tent camps is chanting, “Jews will not replace us,” as Trump supporters have done.

Among the campus protesters, I am seeing Jewish students and Jewish campus organizations among the tent dwellers for Palestinians, and that makes me question the anti-Semitism fears. While there may be anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim remarks made at these protests, many have been attributed to others around the student protesters and not among the students themselves.

If young students, Muslim, Jewish, and Christian, want to protest the war in Gaza, that is not Anti-Semitism OR Pro-Hamas! We must be clear-eyed here that it is the devastation rained down on Gaza that is the offense and not fall back on assuming anti-Semitism because the attacks are launched by Israel. Israel does not get a pass just because there is a history of oppression. The oppressed cannot become the oppressors.

In America, we’re all entitled to be heard but not entitled to use hate speech. Islamaphobia and Anti-Semitism are unacceptable, and even in this day of Trump values, this behavior must be curbed. Yet, branding students protesting the war on Gaza as Jew haters is just plain wrong.
