The 2024 election was a nail in the coffin of the America we grew up in and believed was a solid and steady democracy. We were sleeping while the Right was plotting.
The GOP spent decades planning for this moment. It didn’t just begin with Donald J. Trump. The first glimpse of what was to come was when the GOP’s Supreme Court intervened in Florida’s 2000 presidential election, unconstitutionally installing W. as president (and remember how well that worked out for America). Following that break with rules and law, Mitch McConnell broke rules for Senate confirmation of Supreme Court nominees TWICE, thus rigging and stacking the High Court with right-wing ideologues.
One down of our three-legged stool of governance (legislative, executive, and judicial), two to go. Congress was next for their plan to dominate our government, and to accomplish their goal, they spread lies about rampant voter fraud and pushed to disenfranchise minority voters. Vigorous gerrymandering tied it all up with a fancy bow to stack the 2nd leg of the governing stool.
Now, with control of Congress and the Supreme Court, the GOP set out to empower the Imperial Presidency and brought about King Donald. I still wonder: Are they happy with what they’ve wrought?
We need a Project 2029. It will take decades to save democracy in America, and we have to start somewhere.
Who will start putting it together? I keep thinking that The Brookings Institution could begin by outlining workable policies that politicians could form into achievable goals to present to voters…
… if, that is, the GOP fails to rig future elections as they’re actively trying to do!
