Well… we are where we are. As I consider how/if America will survive this authoritarian takeover, I realize how many of us are looking for OUR leader, our new Obama, to save us.
But I remember that Russia had Alexi Navalny, a charming, handsome, charismatic pro-democracy leader with a huge following. And yet, since authoritarians have a way of jailing their opponents and disappearing them, the Russian people just accepted it when Putin did that to Navalny.
In our today, our here and now, we are living in a country that allows a violent, state-sanctioned militia to shoot and kill a peaceful protester without even the pretense of an investigation.
We ARE like the frog in a pot of water. I think it began when we accepted losing our right to choose and moved on. When we accepted Jan. 6 and shrugged. When we accepted national defense top secret documents to be stolen and stored in a bathroom at Mar-a-Lago… and then reelected the wannabe dictator who did that.
Like the Russian people, we’ve accepted an authoritarian. Oh, I know, there are many of us, maybe as much as 50%, who see it and don’t like it… But will we stand up to it the way Canadian PM Mark Carney did at Davos, or go on accepting it the way Russians accepted the murder of Alexi Navalny?
I don’t know… that’s what I’m pondering.
